In May of 2010 I will be spending 5 weeks traveling through the Mexican states of Yucatan and Campeche, but it’s not the start of my official “Year Around the World”. I am not financially stable enough to start it yet. That adventure should begin sometime in September or October of 2010.
That said, I just couldn’t wait any longer to get some miles on my boots! My case of RTWS is severe, and the symptoms are strengthening. The only movies I’ve been watching and books I’ve been reading are ALL travel related, and it’s the only thing I can think about. My life has become dull to me, and a good healthy dose of culture shock, confusion, unpredictability, and lostness should fix me right up!
A round-trip flight to Mexico was pretty cheap from South Florida for $250, so I just decided to wing it and go! ![]()
The trip should hopefully serve to test out my writing and photography while on the road too. I’m sure there will be some unexpected kinks that need to be worked out.
Mexico Travel Budget:
$20 a Day
My Travel Itinerary:
I plan to divide my time primarily between these three cities:
- Valladolid
- Merida
- Campeche
I want to explore some of the smaller towns in this general vicinity too, while trying to hit up a bunch of remote Cenotes and Mayan ruins.
If you have been to this area before and have any tips or recommendations, feel free to leave a comment below to share your wisdom. The more obscure, wacky, and off the beaten path, the better! ![]()

Hi, congrats on the website
I also love to travel. I just reccently move to Calakmul, Campeche. you should consider it for your travel schedule, its gorgeaus, huge pyramids deep in the jungle, its worth it,
best!
I will be camping out in the biosphere near the Calakmul Mayan site, can't wait!
Matt:
We'll all continue to live vicariously through you. What an incredible adventure. Can't wait to hear how you survive on $20 a day! Best wishes for safe and exciting travel!
Looking forward to reading your posts about Mexico! I'm planning to start there on my own RTW trip next year, so it'll be good to read about someone else doing it while I can't.
Thx guys!
That's great! Maybe I'll be able to give you some tips along the way.
Excited for your adventures!
